Arena Stage Performance Review - May 20, 2012
Before I Forget... A Memoir with Music - Starring Sally-JaneHeitKogod Cradle, better known as Arena Stage, presented Sally-Jane Heit’s one woman show Friday night for one performance only as part of a series called Cabaret in the Cradle. Sally-Jane stepped onto the stage, a tall stately figure, and morphed into a little girl back in Brooklyn.
From there, Ms. Heit carried the audience through her life, her family and her career. In her passionate eloquence, she folded the audience into her huge family to feel the rivalry between eight siblings and the fight to be loved. Her comedic narrative was supported with original songs that she could belt out with gusto in her deep basso voice. As she moved from one chapter of her life to another, she spoke of universal themes that the audience could relate to. The audience reminisced with her, seeing their own lives. Her hopes, her dreams, her disappointments, her anguish and successes--all of us had been there. Like voyeurs reading a private diary, the audience reminisced with her as she expressed the voice of humanity in all of us. by Karen Hamlin |
